Episode 101 (11/24)

EXT. CRESCENT BOARDWALK - DUSK
Dawny and Oliver are at the boardwalk, sitting over the edge of the bridge and eating ice cream happily.
OLIVER (V.O)
One of the fondest memories I have of my mother is when we'd go to the boardwalk. Me and my mom rarely left the house....but when we did, we'd always go there.
The calm of the ocean breeze, her understanding voice, and the taste of my favorite icecream would always make me feel like the world beyond the boardwalk wasn't so bad....
But....
Young Oliver and Dawny are walking back home when they see two men and one woman waiting for Dawny at the door. They look scary to Oliver...
Cut to Opening Theme.
INT. OLIVER'S ROOM - DAWN
Cut to Oliver's alarm clock it clicks to 6:30am and goes off, his favorite song, "Melancholy Hill", plays as his wake up music on his clock.
The sun is just peaking into Oliver's room and he and Tuesday are sleeping soundly.
Oliver's sprawled out and Tuesday's curled happily next to him. She hums in contentment while Oliver snores lightly, choking a bit on his own drool.
Tuesday stirs first, cracking an eye open; annoyed by the alarm.
TUESDAY
(groaning)
Oliver...!
Oliver doesn't wake up, he only rolls over, yawning.
Tuesday pouts and hits at his side.
TUESDAY
Ollie-bear come on, your alarm is going off!
OLIVER
(sleep-talking)
Erm...don't call me Ollie-bear.
Tuesday sighs, floating up and over to get right up in his face. She pokes Oliver's nose and he cracks an eye open, meeting Tuesday's face right up in his. He yelps and leans back a bit before his face goes to deadpan.
OLIVER
What?
TUESDAY
Today's Monday, isn't it? You have school!
Oliver's eyes widen and he springs up, looking at his clock. 6:45am. He hops up, turning off the music and scurrying around to gather some cloths.
OLIVER
Gah! Tuesday, why didn't you tell me it was almost 7!?
TUESDAY
I tried to but you were just all-
(mimicking his voice foolishly)
-"Don't call me Ollie-bear".
Oliver groans in the background. throwing some clothes on the bed and the run right through Tuesday.
OLIVER
Right, right...whatever!
He scurries around some more, brushing his teeth and trying to get dressed at the same time. The scene pauses, showing stills of Oliver trying to rush to school.
OLIVER (V.O)
I guess by now you're wondering who Tuesday is....she's...my imaginary friend.
Oliver's quickly shoving a waffle and coffee in his mouth while Tuesday can't help but giggle at how silly he looks, glares at her, though his glare is dampened by his mouthful of food.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
There's really no good explanation for it other than...I'm that dangerous combination between lonely and crazy...
Oliver looks back at his empty apartment before sighing and closing the door behind him, running down the halls.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
And somehow, I ended up a 14-year-old boy...and still with an imaginary friend....
Cut to Episode title card.
INT. TWILIGHT CENTRAL HIGH CLASSROOM- MORNING
Oliver is sitting in class, reading a book. Tuesday is floating behind him, reading it as well. He's about to turn the page but Tuesday stops his hand.
TUESDAY
Wait, I'm not finished yet.
OLIVER
Oh, come on...you're such a slow reader.
TUESDAY
No, you're just too fast a reader. And you don't even take in half of what you read, you just skim....
Oliver sighs, keeping the same page as Tuesday reads.
TUESDAY
Okay...now you can turn the page.
OLIVER
(snippy)
Well thank you so much for allowing me to do that.
On the other side of the classroom a group of girls are laughing at Oliver.
GIRL #1
Oh my gosh, he's talking to himself again.
GIRL #2
What a freak, I swear he belongs in that psychiatric ward downtown instead of this school. He's completely mental.
Even is in the group as well, but she's keeping quiet.
Oliver can hear the girls talking, but tries to ignore them, though he's thoroughly annoyed and Tuesday's sticking her tongue out at them.
He turns to glare at them, but when he turns he's met dead in the eye with Yoko, she's shamelessly staring at him. Oliver, stunned, looks turns away.
Tuesday continues to make faces at the group of girls.
OLIVER
Stop it Tuesday.
(he pulls her down)
They can't even see you.
Tuesday notices Yoko as well.
TUESDAY
Yeah, but, what's the deal with that girl?
(referring to Yoko)
She's just staring at you....
OLIVER
I know...
Oliver thinks back at the last month of school, and how Yoko's been staring at him and following him around ever since the first day of school.
OLIVER (V.O)
The truth was, she had been staring at me and following me around ever since school started a month ago...
Show Oliver at lunch, and Yoko is sitting at the table behind him, staring at him. The Oliver is running the track at gym and Yoko is walking the track--oddly--with a parisol, and still following him. Then, Oliver is getting ready to rider home after school, and Yoko is near the bike rack, watching him.
Back to Oliver in the classroom, he is unsettled at the thought.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
It's kinda creepy.
Harley enters the class, and everyone stops, looking at her with fascination. She's pretty yet masculine, and everyone thinks she's attractive.
HARLEY
Alright kiddies,
(she slams down papers on her desk)
Project time!
A unanimous groan rolls across the class.
HARLEY
Oh, quit your whining, cause, you see, I'm gonna be nice and let this be a group project.
The class still groans, but they all admit that at least a group project is better.
Except for Oliver, he pouts on the matter, crossing his arms and sinking into his chair, Harley notices.
HARLEY
Stop being so pouty, Evans. You're in high school now, being socially awkward is no longer cute.
Oliver groans and looks around lazily. Everyone's grouping up, but he still continues to simply sit there.
TUESDAY
(hopefully jesting)
Don't you wish I was in this class? Then we could work together.
Oliver stares at her for a moment before smiling and looking away.
OLIVER
Yeah, actually, I do.
They both grin at each other before Oliver leans back in his chair, looking up at the ceiling.
OLIVER
Maybe there will be an odd number of kids...so then I can work alone....
Yoko suddenly enters his vision and Oliver sits up, shocked.
OLIVER
Uh....
YOKO
(nonchalantly)
Wanna work together?
Oliver looks at Tuesday, perplexed.
YOKO
Well....?
Oliver snaps out of his shock and leans, forward, a studying look in his eyes.
OLIVER
I'm not very smart...so if you're pairing up with me because you think I'm the "quiet smart" type, then you're mistaken.
YOKO
I'm aware of you grades...they're nothing to write home about.
Yoko sits and Oliver glowers at her.
YOKO
So, do you want to work together or not?
Oliver opens his mouth, about to make another protest but he leans back in his chair, crossing his arms and sighs.
OLIVER
Fine...
TUESDAY
Oh great, we're working with the stalker chick...
Yoko simply smiles at him, her deadpan face fading into something Oliver finds extremely cute. He blushes.
Cut to end of Act 1 bumper.
EXT. OUTSIDE TWILIGHT CENTRAL HIGH - AFTERNOON
Oliver is putting on his helmet and unchaining his motor scooter.
Tuesday is unhappy.
TUESDAY
How exactly did a group project turn into you going on a date!?
OLIVER
(annoyed and blushing)
It's not a date...just, I don't know...
Flashback to back in class a few hours prior. Oliver and Yoko are working on their project but Oliver seems to be contemplating something else....
OLIVER
(nervous)
So...uh...Yoko...?
Yoko looks up at him.
OLIVER (CONT.)
D-do you wanna hang out...after school...with me...?
Yoko looks surprised before she smiles again.
OLIVER
I-If you don't want to that's-
YOKO
Sure!
Back to present time Oliver is still blushing.
OLIVER
Maybe I got a little carried away but, no one's ever really tried to talk to me...and she did say yes...
Tuesday gets in his face.
TUESDAY
Oh, come on, you know I can tell what you're thinking....you think her smile is cute and she has a sexy-
OLIVER
(covering her mouth)
Okay, okay, I got you...just try and be cool about this, please.
Oliver doesn't notice that Yoko's already walked up.
YOKO
Um....Ready to go...?
Oliver springs back from Tuesday, laughing a bit nervously.
OLIVER
Y-yeah, let's go...!
Yoko gives them a questioning look.
INT. SUBWAY - AFTERNOON
Show Oliver's motor scooter in the bike rack near the subway station before cutting to inside the subway.
Oliver and Yoko are sitting quietly as Oliver keeps daring his eyes back to her, he doesn't exactly know what to say...
Tuesday floats next to him with her arms crossed.
TUESDAY
(sassy)
Well, this is fun.
OLIVER
(muttering)
Shut up, Tuesday.
Yoko looks over at them.
YOKO
Is...something wrong?
OLIVER
What!? No...nope, nothing's wrong.
YOKO
Oh...cause, you know, you're the one who asked me to hang out and you've barely said anything the entire time.
OLIVER
Oh..well, that's just...uh...um...
Yoko looks down, seeming a bit dejected. Oliver immediately snaps out of it and looks at her saddened, it makes him feel bad.
OLIVER
Sorry...
Yoko looks up.
OLIVER
I'm just not...I'm not used to hanging out with actual people.
YOKO
(understanding)
It's okay...I'm not too used to hanging out with other people either.
Oliver looks up at her, timid...but smiles. She returns the grin.
YOKO
So...how about a movie?
INT. MOVIE THEATER
Yoko and Oliver are sitting in a female-oriented drama movie, Yoko and Tuesday seem very into it but Oliver simply sits there.
YOKO
(whispering)
Are you sure you're okay with seeing this?
OLIVER
(also whispering)
Yeah, its no problem.
TUESDAY
(grinning deviously)
Liar.
The movie's dialogue intensifies.
MOVIE GIRL
No! I won't accept that she's gone...I'll go to the ends of the earth trying to find my mother. I won't let those bastards who took her get away with it...!
MOVIE GUY
I wounld't be so sure about that.
Oliver stares at the screen, almost in a trance.
He gets flashbacks of him and his mother, particularly when the psychiatric people came to take her away.
Oliver blinks, trying not to think about it.
The two people in the movie start fighting, and glass breaks on screen. Oliver straightens up, thinking back of when Ace cut his cheek.
Tuesday can tell what he's thinking and grows worried.
TUESDAY
(serious)
Oliver...?
Oliver stands...getting out of the theater, Yoko notices him leaving and blinks for a few moments before she runs after him.
EXT.OUTSIDE THE THEATER - DUSK
Oliver is pacing in the outside lobby, trying to compose himself.
OLIVER
Get it together, get it together. Don't ruin this for yourself, Oliver.
TUESDAY
You know, you don't have to do anything that makes you so uncomfortable just to impress some girl.
OLIVER
That's not the point, Tuesday, I-
YOKO
Oliver!?
Oliver turns and sees Yoko running outside, he looks a bit scared; uncertain of how she'll react.
To his luck, she seems more concerned than angry.
YOKO
What happened, you just ran out...?
OLIVER
Yeah...sorry...it's just that movie brought up some bad memories is all.
(beat)
You can go back in and keep watching it but...
(he closes his eyes for a moment, looking pained)
...I'm just gonna go home...
Yoko frowns, looking just as pained before she grabs his wrist. Oliver turns towards her, looking a bit surprised.
YOKO
If the movie bothers you that much then...how about we just take a walk around the city....?
Oliver blinks.
YOKO
It's just...
(she smiles timidly to herself)
I'd like to keep hanging out with you...
INT. CLOTHING STORE - DUSK
In a montage of scenes, Oliver and Yoko continue to just hang around the city.
First, Yoko drags Oliver into an olden-times clothing store. Oliver sits near the dressing rooms, looking thoroughly bored before Yoko opens the door to her dressing room, dressed in a classic Victorian dress, complete with parisol.
Oliver immediately perks up, mainly because Yoko just looks very appealing in the dress. He makes a goofy grin before Tuesday floats over and glares at him. He calms down a bit.
EXT. CITY PLAZA
After leaving the store--Yoko having apparently bought the dress--Oliver points over to a "free sidewalk chalk" even happening in the plaza. He seems rather excited about it and drags Yoko over to it.
OLIVER (V.O)
It was nice...hanging out with Yoko. Because for so long it had just been me and Tuesday....
Cut to him finishing a drawing of a Gryphon.
Yoko is both shocked and impressed as Oliver shows her his art, all excited almost like a little child.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
I had seen those friendship montages in movies before...but I never thought I'd actually have one, myself.
Tuesday starts making funny faces behind Yoko, and Oliver chastises her, Yoko notices and looks at him quizzically.
EXT. CITY STREET - SUNSET
Yoko is simply talking to Oliver as they walk down the street, and Oliver is smiling at her fondly.
Yoko stops, though, as they pass the boardwalk and stares at it. Oliver turns to face her.
OLIVER
Hey, it's...getting kind of late. I should get you home.
YOKO
(still looking at the boardwalk)
Just one more place...
She runs onto the boardwalk, turning back to smile at Oliver.
YOKO
I wanna watch the sunset.
Oliver stares, a bit uncertain. He hasn't been back to the boardwalk since his mother died.
TUESDAY
Oliver....you don't have to--
OLIVER
No...I need to get over this....
EXT. BOARDWALK - SUNSET
Oliver and Yoko are sitting on the edge of the boardwalk, both eating Italian ices.
Oliver looks at his Italian ice suspiciously.
OLIVER
What is this stuff....?
YOKO
(with her mouth full)
Italian ice...try some, it's good.
Oliver scrutinizes it once more before tasting it. He shrugs and continues eating.
OLIVER
So...
YOKO
(still eating)
Hmm...?
OLIVER
I've been meaning to ask you...why exactly have you been following me around since school started?
YOKO
I have an unconventional way of trying to meet people...but you just seemed interesting...
OLIVER
(blushing)
Oh....
YOKO
What about you? How come you're always alone?
Oliver stops eating, mid-bite and Tuesday gives him a worried look.
OLIVER
(laughing bitterly to himself)
Haven't you heard...? I'm the school freak.
YOKO
(she pauses before answering)
Is it because you talk to yourself all the time...?
Oliver's eyes widen and he drops his Italian ice in the water.
YOKO
I mean, I guess that is a little odd but...
He gets more flashbacks of looking at his mother's grave, and Tuesday is right by his side before it cuts to the kids in his kidnergarten class bullying him, backing him into a corner and calling him "freak."
The kids chant "freak" and a younger Oliver cowers in the corner, hugging Tuesday.
Back the present Oliver snaps.
OLIVER
Shut up!
Yoko stops talking, raising a brow as Oliver pants.
Tuesday simply looks at him, arms crossed, but her brows knit together, looking both frustrated and sad.
YOKO
(confused and cautious)
O-Oliver...?
Oliver stands, his bangs covering his eyes as he walks away without saying a word.
Tuesday follows him, taking his hand in support.
Yoko simply sits there, stunned before frowning. The sun sets behind her and she watches it before turning back...Oliver is already gone. Yoko sighs.
Cut to end of Act 2 bumper.
INT. OLIVER'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Oliver is simply lying on his bed, looking up at his ceiling fan. Tuesday is hovering near him.
TUESDAY
You probably shouldn't have left her there....that was kind of rude.
OLIVER
(bitterly)
You're one to talk.
Tuesday backs down...sighing, before floating closer to him, sounding more sincere.
TUESDAY
I'm sorry....
OLIVER
It's not you're fault...I'm just a freak...a real freak....
Tuesday frowns and hugs him.
TUESDAY
That's not true Ollie-Bear....
Oliver doesn't offer a rebuttal, but just hugs her tightly, still looking up at the ceiling.
INT. TWILIGHT CENTRAL HIGH HALLWAYS - MORNING
Oliver is walking in a dead walk to his locker, only to find Yoko leaning against it. He sighs.
OLIVER
(he's not in the mood to deal with her)
What is it Yoko?
YOKO
(pissed off)
Don't "What is it, Yoko" me! You left me at the boardwalk at night with no ride home!
Oliver shuts his eyes, he knows he was a jerk but doesn't want to deal with it.
YOKO
Just...why? I thought we were having fun....
OLIVER
We were...
YOKO
Then why-?
OLIVER
Look, Yoko....I'm sorry for ditching you but...It's just...it's me...I'm just not built for this kind of stuff.
Yoko looks at him, confused.
OLIVER
Some people are made to be social and...I'm not like that. I can't...I can't do this whole friendship thing. I'm too weird.
Yoko opens her mouth to speak, but thinks for a moment, taking in everything Oliver has said.
YOKO
So...when you talk to yourself you're....?
OLIVER
(laughs bitterly in spite of himself)
I'm not talking to myself...I talking to someone...you just can't see her.
TUESDAY
(shocked)
Oliver!? What are you doing?
YOKO
I don't understand....
OLIVER
(oddly strong)
Her name's Tuesday...she's my imaginary friend.
Tuesday looks stunned that Oliver actually said it, and Yoko stares at him for a while, shock, disbelief, and a perplexed look dance across her facial expressions.
OLIVER
I'm crazy Yoko...you don't need to be around someone like me.
Oliver walks away and Yoko is too stunned to follow after him. She simply looks down, thinking if she really wants to keep pursuing Oliver with that new piece of information.
INT. LUNCH ROOM - DAY
Oliver is getting lunch from the line, and tries to find a seat.
OLIVER (V.O)
I don't know what I was expecting with Yoko....
He sits down in a certain place and the few people surrounding scoot as far away from him as possible.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
I guess I just wanted...hoped that for once I'd feel normal.
Yoko looks over at Oliver, studying him from afar while Oliver continues to eat, Tuesday stays by him placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
OLIVER (V.O CONT.)
That I was at least capable of it...
EXT. OUTSIDE TWILIGHT CENTRAL HIGH - MID-DAY
After school, Oliver is getting on his scooter to go home, and Yoko still stares at him from afar. He's talking to Tuesday and she squints, looking hurt and curious at the same time before walking over to him.
Oliver notices her coming and sighs.
OLIVER
Yoko don't-
YOKO
(bluntly)
I need a ride home.
OLIVER
Yoko...
YOKO
You owe me.
Oliver sighs, know she's right. He looks at Tuesday, but she doesn't offer him any kind of support on that.
Still, Oliver knows the he should, and looks at her, giving in.
EXT. EUREKA STREET - DUSK
Oliver is driving Yoko home on his motor scooter. Tuesday is "banished" to the basket in front, pouting.
Oliver keeps silent until Yoko leans into him, placing her head on his shoulder.
OLIVER
Yoko...you don't have to pity me, okay? I don't need it.
YOKO
Who said anything about pity? I liked hanging out with you yesterday...and I like you...despite you ditching me.
Oliver perks up, stunned and blushing.
OLIVER
R-really...?
YOKO
Mmm hmm...
(she leans further into his shoulder, getting comfortable)
I think you're fascinating.....
Tuesday looks back at Oliver, who is looking nervously at the road but blushing madly. She frowns, looking a combination of sad and almost jealous.
EXT. OUTSIDE THE OSAKI MANOR - DUSK
Oliver and Yoko pull up to Yoko's house, it a huge manor. Oliver and Tuesday both gasp.
OLIVER
You live here!?
YOKO
(nonchalantly)
Yep.
She hops off his motor scooter.
YOKO
Thank you for the ride home.
OLIVER
Yeah...well...you were right, I did owe you...
(his eyes dart around nervously)
And...well...thanks...for putting up with me.
Yoko smiles.
YOKO
I'll see you at school tomorrow...we can have lunch together.
Oliver perks up, he's never been asked that before.
OLIVER
(trying to contain his happiness, but fails)
Sure!
(he clears his throat, keeping his cool)
I-I mean, sure.
Yoko laughs before holding out her hand.
YOKO
Goodnight Oliver.
Oliver looks at her hand quizzically, but shakes it nonetheless. She's so oddly formal.
OLIVER
Yeah...goodnight.
But Yoko, surprisingly reaches her hand over to Oliver's right.
YOKO
And goodnight to you...Tuesday.
Oliver and Tuesday both gasp, but Yoko simply smiles, holding her hand out.
OLIVER (V.O)
That day marked a particularly important point in my life. I didn't know what it was yet but I knew something was changing...
Tuesday looks over at Yoko's hand...but she's on Oliver's left, not right. She crosses her arms.
OLIVER (V.O)
Yoko's smile was warm and understanding....I almost didn't have the heart to tell her that Tuesday was on the other side....
